Flip the Dog tries out Guppyfriend

Using eco friendly fabrics, such as fabric created from recycled plastics, is only part of a solution to reducing waste plastic in the environment. With most fabrics, when they are worn or washed, small fibres are shed. This is something that the fashion industry needs to wake up to and why Flip the Dog are keen advocates of innovation in micro filter products.... does not sound very exciting I admit... :) but these natty products used when washing clothes can cut down the amount of fibres which end up in the waste water and ultimately can end up back in the sea. Washing machines do part of the job themselves but there are still some escapees.

The first one we have tried out is a Guppyfriend, This is a bag in which you put your clothes and then wash in the machine as normal. Any fibres shed gather in the bag and you can then get rid of them after the wash. The Guppyfriend website states that this is a "patented solution, that filters out the tiniest microfibers released from textiles during washing. The self-cleaning fabric bag is made of a specially designed micro-filter material. Simply collect the fibers and dispose them of properly." Sounds great but perhaps realistically, these may only catch on in the main stream if your clothes wash just as well in the bag as out. So how did we get on? Watch this space.....
